Invitation

Each year wildland fires strike on nearly every continent, and each year they are becoming increasingly more devastating. But each year valuable lessons are learned by firefighters about better ways to manage them.

Sydney, while one of the world's most beautiful cities, is also in the heart one of the world’s most wildland fire prone areas That is why we are very pleased to invite you to join us here, in June next year, for International Wildfire Management Conference Australia, 2009.

This conference is jointly sponsored by the NSW Rural Fire Service, the Rural Fire Service Association in association with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

This major conference will bring together experts from around the world to look at many of the major issues facing wildland firefighters and agencies, as well as land managers and environmentalists.

The conference will present three main streams:

These streams will cover a range of topics, with key presentations by fire personnel, land managers, environmental experts, educators and government and community representatives that have extensive experience in combating wildland fires, and protecting communities from their impacts.

The program has been designed to allow delegates to attend aspects of each stream so they will be able to choose from the topics that best fit their specific interests.Additionally, the Conference will incorporate an outstanding trade exhibition where you will be able to see some of the best wildland firefighting products and services in the world on display.

In recognition of the growing importance of the role played by community education in the prevention of wildland fires, the Conference will also include the highly acclaimed Australasian Education and Fire Awareness Conference in 2009.

We strongly recommend this conference to you, and we hope that you will be able to join us in Sydney from the 18 - 20 June for International WildFire Management Conference Australia 2009, as we look at the challenges that are facing all of us and learn from each other how we can do our very best to meet them.

Australia's first official bush fire brigade was formed in NSW over 100 years ago.

In 1997 the NSW Rural Fire Service was formed as the successor to that first brigade. The Rural Fire Service is the world's largest volunteer fire fighting agency and protects some of the world’s most fire prone areas.

Today, the Service comprises over 2000 volunteer rural fire brigades and has a total membership of more than 71,000 unpaid volunteer firefighters and covering more than 95 per cent of NSW.

RFS volunteers are not only involved in fighting and preventing bush fires but also attend structure fires, road accidents, search and rescue and storm and flood recovery.

The RFS's members come from all walks of life and are truly professional in their approach and training and are motivated by their dedication to helping protect lives and property within their communities.
